Bedfordshire County Championships Parts 1+2 – February/March 2006
Flitwick Dolphins showed
their true colours last weekend as the 2006 County Championships got under
way. All swimmers performed
outstandingly and collected an impressive 112 Personal Bests and 11 Eastern
Region District Qualifying Times.
Rhianydd Jones, 13, and Charlotte Beck, picked up Bronze
and Gold Medals respectively in the 1500m Freestyle with both girls setting new
Club Records in this and the 800m corresponding event. Jack McGarry secured Silver in the Boys 11
year age group with a time of 21:55.10 and Carl Halford smashed his Personal
Best to 20:02.21.
Charlotte
Beck, 11, also swam a superb 200m Butterfly in just 2:58.29 giving her a Silver
Medal, Club Record and Eastern Region Qualifying time. 10 year old Georgina Halford’s impressive
swim won her a Gold medal and her brother Carl set a new Club Record for the
Boys’ 13 year age group in 800m Freestyle and finishing 3rd. 11 year old Leah Neary swam an impressive
weekend smashing her Personal Bests in all events entered. Sarah Haslett, 13, took the Silver Medal in
the 100m Freestyle setting herself a new Personal Best, Club Record and
achieving an Eastern Region Qualifying Time in doing so. She also got Bronze and Eastern Region times
in the 200m Backstroke and Individual Medley events.
Philippa
Relf, 14, set new Club Records in both the 100m Freestyle and 200m Backstroke
as did Isabelle Martin and Hayden Davies, both aged 9, Simon Weighell, Georgina
Halford, Leah Neary and Jack McGarry in other events over the course of the
weekend. Additional Eastern Region
Qualifying times were achieved by Simon Weighell, Ian Davies and David Allen.
Isabelle and Hayden, competing in their first major
competition, scooped two Golds and two Silvers between them.
Amongst the younger swimmers, the 200m Backstroke
proved to be one of the events of the weekend with 9 year olds Christopher
Murphy winning the silver medal and Connor Beck finishing in 3rd place giving
him his first ever Championship medal.
Thomas Winder won second place for the 11 year olds and Simon Liddle,
13, came third in his age group.
The weekend closed with Dolphin’s 10 year old Girls
going home with Gold Medals after winning the 200m Medley Relay event.
The swimmers, praised by their Coaches for
outstanding achievements, are again following vigorous training schedules in
anticipation of next weekend’s final events of the Championships.
