Bedfordshire County Championships Part 3 – March 2006

Last weekend concluded the 2006 County Championships with Flitwick Dolphins’ swimmers performing brilliantly and no less than 101 Personal Best Times being swum.  19 further Club Records were broken, 46 medals won and 8 District Qualifying Times were achieved in addition to those at the previous weekend of the competition.

Isabelle Martin, 9, dominated the weekend by winning a Bronze medal in the 50m Freestyle, 3 silvers setting a new Club Record and gaining an Eastern Region Qualifying time in her 200m Breaststroke event.  She was also awarded the Lancer Boss Trophy for the youngest swimmer achieving a District time.  Staying with the girls, Georgina Halford, Ashleigh Jones, Isabelle Martin and Lucie Nash won the shield for the Under 10’s Medley Relay.

Victoria Abbott, 9, swam a superb 200m Breaststroke beating her Personal Best and gaining a Bronze medal.  Christopher Murphy, 9, and Jack McGarry, 11, both won silver medals in their respective age groups for the 200m Breaststroke with 11 year old Thomas Winder finishing a close third.

Georgina Halford and Sarah Haslett both won Gold medals in the 400m Freestyle for their own age groups and Charlotte Beck, 11, went home with the Bronze, gaining a District Qualifying Time and setting a new Club Record in doing so.  Hayden Davies, aged 9, swam a brilliant 50m Backstroke winning him a Gold medal and a new Club Record of 44.43 seconds as did Thomas Winder, 11, finishing in 36.58 seconds.

Coach, Martin Hotson, was extremely delighted with the performances of all his squad, including Hayden Davies, Isabelle Martin, Kayleigh Russell, Victoria Abbott, Joe McGarry, Connor Beck, James Winder, Amy Foley and Holly Barber, many of whom were competing in their first ever Championships.

Over the three weekends of the Championships, the Dolphins' haul of 83 medals, 19 District and 245 Personal Best times were all up on last year.  Consistently high standards achieved through intensive training were rewarded with five individual County BAGCAT awards: Silver to Isabelle Martin (9), Christopher Murphy (9) and Thomas Winder (11); and Bronze to Georgina Halford (10) and Jack McGarry (11).  Amy Foley (9), Aran Chamberlain-Clark (11) and Sarah Haslett (13) narrowly missed out with creditable fourth places.  With such strong performances from our younger swimmers, Flitwick Dolphins looks forward to further success in future.
