East Region Age Group Championships – June 2006

Local swimmers from the Flitwick Dolphins Squad took the ASA East Region Age Group Championships by storm over the last two weekends at the University of East Anglia’s Olympic-sized pool in Norwich.

Sarah Haslett, 13, beat her 800 metres Freestyle Personal Best by 7 seconds and her 400 Individual Medley by 6 seconds. She also swam an impressive 200 metres Freestyle beating her own record by a further 3 seconds where she was ranked 17th on entry finishing in 6th place taking her into the Final where she took off another second giving her 5th position overall in the event.

Charlotte Beck smashed her 200 metres Butterfly Personal Best by 3 seconds to qualify for her first major Final where she exceeded her time by a further 6 seconds gaining her a Bronze Medal, narrowly missing out on the Silver by less than a second. She also took Bronze for the 1500M Freestyle where she took in excess of half a minute off her Personal Best.

Rhianydd Jones, 13, finished in 7th place in the corresponding event for her age group having moved up 3 positions from her ranking of 10th on entry.

Beck, 11, exceeded her 200m Individual Medley Personal Best by 7 seconds to qualify for the Final where she knocked off a further second. Ranked 19th in her age group on entry she moved up to 8th position then on to finish an impressive 6th place in the Final.

David Allen, 10, swam a superb 200M Freestyle in his first Championships smashing his entry time, where he was ranked 23rd, by a massive 10 seconds to finish in 12th position.

Isabelle Martin, also 10 and competing in her first major Championships, swam an excellent 100m Breaststroke taking 4 seconds off her Personal Best.

12 year old Simon Weighell stormed his 100m Freestyle finishing in an impressive 15th position having been ranked 31st on entry. His younger brother Colin, 10, also improved his ranking from 13th on entry up to 12th.

Summarizing, over the course of the Championships, Flitwick Dolphins gained a total of 20 new Personal Bests, plus an additional 6 for the Relays. A further 3 were achieved from Finals.

The Club had 7 qualifiers, with a total of 28 individual entries, 5 of which qualified for Finals. 88% of these improved their heat ranking status and 60% improved on their Final ranking status.

Sarah Haslett and Charlotte Beck both finished the Championships in 10th place for their respective Age Group Categories.
