Dolphins Shine at East Region Age-Group Championships – June 2007

Local swimmers from the Flitwick Dolphins Squad did the Club proud at the ASA East Region Championships this month at the University of East Anglia’s Olympic pool in Norwich.

Swimming in his first Regional Championships, Chris Murphy (10) broke Club records in the 400m medley and 100m freestyle, finishing ninth and 15th. In the 11 years age group, David Allen also claimed new Club records for the 200m medley and 400m freestyle, setting three personal bests in the process. Colin Weighell set four personal bests from eleven individual events, coming eighth in the 1500m freestyle and ninth in the 800m freestyle. Hayden Davies secured 10th place in the 800m freestyle, breaking his best time in two events.

Swimming in her second Regional Championships, Izzy Martin (11) broke the Club record in the 100m and 200m breaststroke and set personal bests in the 200m backstroke and 400m freestyle. Georgina Halford (12) claimed 10th place in the 1500m freestyle, four places ahead of brother Carl (14), with Leah Neary coming 12th and Toby Willson 10th in the age 13 events.

Simon Weighell (13) swam a measured 200m breaststroke heat to qualify for his first major Final before knocking off more than five seconds to claim a superb Silver medal. Weighell was joined in the 100m breaststroke Final by Tom Winder. Both boys again turned up the pace, beating their heat times by more than a second to finish third and sixth. Aran Chamberlain-Clark (12) also qualified for a Final in his first Regional Championships, narrowly missing out on a medal with an excellent fourth place and smashing his personal best by four seconds.

Michael McDonnell (11) and Kimberley Burrows (13) also swam well in their first Regional Championships.

Overall, the Club had 14 individual qualifiers this year, substantially up from 5 swimmers in 2006. Flitwick Dolphins swimmers competed in 58 individual heats, four finals and 4 relay events, setting 27 personal bests and 13 club records.
