Biggleswade Summer Trophy Gala – June 2007
Flitwick Dolphins made the short journey to the Saxon Pool last week to contest the Biggleswade Summer Trophy Gala. Great team spirit and some strong individual performances saw the Dolphins finish a strongly-contested gala as top visiting club in second place overall.
Kayleigh Russell won the girls’ 10 years 50m backstroke and Georgina Halford won the girls’ 11-12 years event. Simon Weighell won the boys’ 13-14 years 100m breaststroke, setting a new club record, and Tom Winder won the boys’ 13-14 years medley. Kelsey Bassett, Megan Underwood, Clara Neary and Kayleigh Russell were victorious in the girls’ 9-10 years special medley relay. Demonstrating strength in depth, the squad rounded off the evening by winning the 16×25m squadron freestyle relay.
New Club records were also set by Izzy Martin (50m breaststroke), Chris Murphy (50m butterfly) and Kayleigh Russell (50m freestyle). Simon Weighell broke the one minute barrier for the first time, recording a 100m freestyle time of 59.39 to claim a bottle of champagne from Head Coach Diane Brinkler. Special mention goes to the squad’s youngest member Iona Chamberlain-Clark for a gutsy 50m freestyle, and to mystery swimmer Steve Davies for rolling back the years.
Many individual swimmers travelled to Tiddenfoot Leisure Centre for the Leighton Buzzard B-Grade Open Meet. Strength in depth was evident once again with a haul of 46 medals and 57 personal best times for the day.
Amy Foley (10) and James Winder (10) struck gold in their 50m breaststroke events, as did Sofia Aatkar (12) and Simon Liddle (15) in the 200m freestyle. Kimberley Burrows (13) triumphed in the 100m backstroke and Tom Winder (13) in the 100m freestyle. Sam Tilbury (16) took the total to seven gold medals with the girls’ 200m medley, also winning two of the nine silver medals on the day.
Kelsey Bassett, Ronnie Curr-Partridge, Bethany Francis, Andrew Young, Toby Willson and Emily Simmons delighted coach Becky Gilbertson by setting a personal best time in every event they contested, as did Charlotte Mace in her first competitive gala.
