FAIR PLAY – DRUGS IN SPORT

Sport is fundamental to developing healthy and positive values and beliefs, including tolerance, team spirit, self-awareness and strength of character.  Sport brings together young and old people from all different backgrounds and cultures and reminds each of us that we share similar dreams and goals to succeed.

Sport in particular provides young people with the perfect opportunity to form friendships, build confidence and reach their full potential.  These young people should be encouraged and given opportunities to participate in sport at all levels as these are tomorrow’s world-class athletes.

Succeeding in sport is not just about finishing first. It’s about knowing within yourself that your success is because of you, your dedication and your commitment cleanly and fairly.

The aim is to promote Drug-Free Sport and we as a club are committed to that goal by raising awareness and understanding of the value of participating in drug-free sport by promoting the following key messages:

ü       Sport is about competing and performing to the best of your ability cleanly and fairly

ü       The use of prohibited substances or methods is cheating.

THE ASA AND DOPING CONTROL

In Britain, any registered competitive swimmer may be tested for drug abuse, young swimmers and members competing below National Age Group level tend not to be tested.  By raising awareness of the doping control procedures at our level, we feel that this is the first step to creating a drug free sport for the future.

Further information on doping control procedures is available here and at the Club Desk.

CHECKING MEDICATION

One of the most important rules for you to know about as an athlete is that there are many substances that are banned in Sport.  You must be very careful that you don’t make a mistake in taking a banned substance.  Many common medications for common illnesses, for example a cold or hay fever, can contain prohibited substances so you should always check if your medicine is banned or permitted (even if it is prescribed by your doctor).  Remember the downhill Skier in the Winter Olympics and the Vicks inhaler!

The best way to ensure that you are competing drug-free is to check whether a medication or substance is permitted before taking it.  To check your medication you could use UK Sport’s services web site.
